Do you remember The Official Preppy Handbook? When I was 13 I flipped through those pages, whilst clad in my kelly green and navy rugby shirt with whale belt and Pappagallo bag, dreaming of a preppy boyfriend to have a preppy baby with and settle in a preppy home. What was it about those god-awful plaid pants that I found attractive? Maybe I dreamed of being a WASP because I came from the less prestigious set of MUTTS.

But who wouldn't want to be living a privileged life, standing by the swimming pool in the perfect shade of pink, holding a pure bred of some sort, and speaking through the teeth with proper Neutral American Speech? Which is, I guess, why the runways are flooded with the new & improved vision of prepster. The recipe for success in this equation? Hot, Italian, twenty-something models! (me likey!)

      untitled-4-copy

In truth, this all came about when I saw "an audaciously preppy den" in Domino magazine where it looks like large scale grosgrain ribbon is lining the walls. Very cool and interesting... it makes me want to run out and buy a white, fluffy toy poodle and name her Muffy!

Of course, Candace Olson is the Super Star of HGTV. And she constantly rocks my world with her chic, sophisticated and always sensual spaces. Her favorite ingredients? A little crystal, a little chrome, a cool color palette, tons of custom cabinetry, and "divine" textiles. I can't get enough of her! The latest was taking the 80s out of this tiny master. Tres chic, magnifique! (sp??)

This new show on HGTV called The Stagers is pretty excellent. There's madness and chaos at all times, and I LOVE IT! The hosts are fab and funny. I only saw one episode but I love how it took a real "behind the scenes" perspective. It really is like that... people are fighting and power-playing at all costs. The ingredients for success in this show's recipe? Spice and sass!

The new show on HGTV called RED, HOT and GREEN is hip, fun and informative. It sounds like it could be a show about Mexican vegetarian cuisine... but it's an eco-friendly renovation show. Carter Oosterhouse is the big star of the network and he's not only a hotty but he knows his stuff. I've only seen the show once, but I have seen Carter's other show, Carter Can, and his furniture building skills are amazingly impressive! Nicole Facciuto is a great sidekick and designer... her stuff is top notch. What makes this show a recipe for success? The talents of the carpenter and designer, and it's slick, well produced quality.

      Design Dilemma - Kat's Bathroom

      http://wuslu.com/designdilemma

2.14.10 This is what I received from Kat:

Help! I need to remodel my bathroom but I am coming up with a problem as to how I will have enough storage space once I remove the sink vanity and the large cabinet shown in the picture. The large cabinet, consequently, also blocks my light source making the bathroom darker. Light is not a problem during the day, but all in all I need to both brighten the bathroom during the remodeling process but also not remove too much of my storage space. Any feedback you give would be appreciated.

So I contacted her got more info about the bathroom and some dimensions to sketch it and here is what I came up with:

after seeing the photos and the 3d, here is my take:
The bathroom is an average size but yet it appears much smaller that what it really is. That's due to a couple of factors:
      1. The tall storage cabinet in the middle of the wall. This cabinet is cutting the bathroom in half and creating a big block in the way.
      2. The fact that the cabinet is blocking the window -The only source of natural light in the room.
      3. The darker paint color
      4. The low ceiling at 7'-6".

I believe that storage in a bathroom is curtail. We can maintain the same storage capacity by either retaining the storage cabinet but relocating it to the door wall, so that it falls between the wall and the sink. Or we can go with a horizontal storage solution with no vertical blocking .

      Something like below two options:

When you look at the after plan and perspective above you can see right away how much bigger and brighter the bathroom will feel by simply eliminating the big block and relocating it to the door wall. Or we can remove the storage cabinet completely and replace the one sink with a Double Sink Vanity with storage underneath. This help increasing the value of your house as well!

For the double sink vanity we can use something like this:

#1. On the door wall, a scenic art in the color combination you like (purple and blue)
#2. Wall sconces with a simple design but with some glam finishes. Reflective materials are key to the success of this design, therefore, the metal finish of the sconces is polished chrome.
#3. Wall mirrors in simple lines and a wood color that matches the vanity. Adding these mirrors will make the bathroom feel much bigger.
#4. Black metal art work for the wall between the door and the tub. Every wall in your bath is completely thought through so that at the end we'll have a one cohesive design.
#5. Double vanity sink cabinet in dark wood finish
#6. Preserved flowers (no sun or soil are required) in the accent colors. This is key to tie the design together.
#7. White marble tile on the floor. Maybe we can introduce a thin border of the glass tile in purple and blue into the floor.
#8. A laundry basket that matches in color and design the vanity sink
#9. Simple white towels. If you want to add a color, I would go with black.
#10. The window wall in blue and purple glass tile. This is the first wall you see when you enter the spacem. This wall is the soul of your bathroom, it will make a huge design statement. Remember that all other walls, accessories and the ceiling are white and a little black.

      Hope you like it!
As far as budget: with creativity, sweat equity and WUSLU this can be accomplished under $3000

      Take care,
      Yas

I've decided I have to imagine my dream house one room at a time.  Starting with my ultimate writing studio/library (I hate the word "office" although there will be space in my dream room for the laptop, printer, and other necessities).  I imagine hardwood floors, maybe some dark wood beams, wrought iron window fixtures, and raspberry or claret colored velvet drapes.  Kind of like a castle, but a little more shabby chic.  I'll have some sort of table for just composing--I do most of my creative writing longhand and revise on my laptop.  I'd like a chaise for knitting and napping in this room, but also another comfortable chair for reading, and also writing and journaling.  I've seen just such a chair at Mackenzie Childs.  They call it the Diva Chair---perfect!

So my friend Kat sent me some pictures of her old tired bathroom and asked for my help.

This is what I received from Kat:

So I contacted her got more info about the bathroom and some dimensions to sketch it and here is what I came up with:

As you'll see in the pictures - without anyones feelings- the bathroom is dark and the space is chopped up.
The bathroom is an average size but yet it appears much smaller that what it really is. That's due to a couple of factors:
      1. The tall storage cabinet in the middle of the wall. This cabinet is cutting the bathroom in half and creating a big block in the way.

Or we can remove the storage cabinet completely and replace the one sink with a Double Sink Vanity with storage underneath. This help increasing the value of your house as well!

For the double sink vanity we can use something like this:

I sent this email to Kat:
The next step now is to figure how the interiors will look like. To do so, I need you to answer the following questions without thinking about the bathroom:

      1. What are your favorite 3 colors (in general, not for the bathroom project)?

      2. What are your husband's favorite 3 colors (in general, not for the bathroom project)?

      3. What kind of art do you and your husband like to look at? feel free to upload photos

One last request, please take a photo showing the tub and its surroundings.

      Thanks you,

      ____________________________________________

Kat responded: Wow, it's hard just to pick three colors, I do tend to like Monochrome colors like black and white, I also like cobalt blue.

My husband likes black, white and purple.

My husband would enjoy any art having to do with soccer, LOL, seriously though he leans towards scenic art.

I have so many favorites but if I have to narrow it down to one type, I would say abstract art with geometric patterns. :)

      Some photos coming up!!

      ______________________________________
And my email back to kat:
      Kat,

Knowing the colors and the art you like that's how I envision your bathroom.

The entire bathroom will be white and black except for one accent wall and some accessories.

#1. On the door wall, a scenic art in the color combination you like (purple and blue)

#2. Wall sconces with a simple design but with some glam finishes. Reflective materials are key to the success of this design, therefore, the metal finish of the sconces is polished chrome.

He either has a gay man's eye or an art team that helps him dress these spaces. They are impeccibly designed, mostly. And he is just adorable. Another Canadian import, it would appear. The new show on HGTV, SELLING NEW YORK, is a hard hitting high wire act for the very, very wealthy. Michelle Kleier is a smart, savvy woman with an attitude. She obviously belongs to the Uptown set and circles in the right social environments to continue with such wealthy clientelle. I love the show because it deals with a lifestyle that is so out of reach. It's a constant reminder that there is an untouchable elite in this country. It's eye candy for the proverbial materialist (and a secret obsession of mine!)
